Baker Backup Trask Staying 'Ready at All Times'

Kyle Trask has not seen much action since the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted him in 2021. His first two seasons in the NFL positioned him behind future Hall of Famer Tom Brady and now he prepares to backup Baker Mayfield for a second season.

The current Bucs' starter beat out Trask for the job in 2023. Despite a shaky start last year, Mayfield solidified himself in that spot, leading Tampa Bay to another NFC South title and an appearance in the NFC Divisional round.

But Trask has not waned on his ability and instead embraces the backup role. The Florida product has stayed ready in case his number is called.

“Obviously, anything can happen, so you just always have to be ready to just play football, so, you have to be ready at all times," Trask said . "I just keep preparing like I’ve always been preparing, but at the same time, still supporting those around me and doing everything I can to contribute with the role that I currently have.”

Trask is currently jousting for position in the quarterback room with John Wolford. Both should see time in the preseason though Trask is likely first of the two to get on the field during Saturday's matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.

For the Bucs, the hope is Mayfield stays on the field at all times unless the game at hand gets out of reach one way or the other. Tampa Bay had a slight scare when the starter's thumb collided with a teammate's helmet on a throw at practice this week.

Mayfield appears to be fine, but that instance points to the truth of staying ready. Sometimes, it can be an unusual accident that draws the backup quarterback into a game.

Regardless of his  limited experience, Trask seems to have the poise to step for the Bucs in if necessary.
