The New York Jets are scheduled to open the regular season on the road at the San Francisco 49ers. The Jets could get a lucky break and play the defending NFC Champions without their top two offensive weapons.

Receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed 1,342 receiving yard last season, is embroiled in a contract dispute and rumored to be trade bait to multiple teams.

On Wednesday, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan announced another key issue ... This time to running back Christian McCaffrey.

“Christian has a calf strain, did it a couple days ago,” Shanahan said. “It’s alright. He didn’t pull it or anything, but you guys probably won’t see him this preseason.”

McCaffrey led the league in rushing last year, compiling 1,459 rushing yards and 14 scores. He also had 67 catches for 564 yards out of the backfield, putting him over 2,000 yards from scrimmage on the season.

McCaffrey missed most of 2020 and 2021, playing in just 10 games in those two seasons with leg and ankle injuries. While a calf strain doesn’t seem like a lot, it can be extremely painful to run on.

We are sure the Jets and the 49ers will both keep an eye on these situations. The biggest question for McCaffrey if he plays is, will he be 100 percent? And who knows if Aiyuk will still be on the team?

All of that remains to be seen as we are just a month away from the kickoff of the regular season.
