Oklahoma Reveals New Uniforms For Upcoming College Football Game

Oklahoma football made fans very happy on Thursday when they announced throwback uniforms for their Week 2 home game against Houston.

The uniform, which you can see in the tweet below, is representative of those worn by the dominant Sooner teams of the 1940s and 1950s, primarily in the Bud Wilkinson era. It's also part of a series of themes Oklahoma will feature at each home game this season.

"Oklahoma’s 2024 alternate uniform is representative of the one worn by OU teams from 1946-56," said a release from OU's athletics website . "As part of the 100th-year celebration of Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, each 2024 home game will feature a different theme. The Houston contest will spotlight the Wilkinson era."

The release from Oklahoma's website included some background on Bud Wilkinson, explaining the legacy he built back in the 40s, 50s, and 60s.

"Wilkinson coached the Sooners from 1947-63 and compiled a 145-29-4 record," said the website. "(He) led Oklahoma to 47 consecutive wins from the 1953 to 1957 seasons, still the longest streak in FBS history. Wilkinson directed OU to its first three AP national championships in 1950, 1955 and 1956."

Despite 16 years at the helm and such a remarkable list of accomplishments, when Wilkinson walked away from his post as Sooner head coach, he was just 47 years old. Those 16 years were his only as a college head coach, and they were plenty good enough to earn Wilkinson his enshrinement in the Hall of Fame.
