Adam Ottavino said, “ I think it would be foolish to let me go.”

Mets fans have been very negative about Ottavino, but his numbers have been solid this year.

Ottavino had a terrible May. He allowed a 1.021 OPS. Because of that month, Ottavino’s stats for the year don’t look great.

The 38 year old was elite in April/March and in June. He allowed an OPS under .500 in those months.

Ottavino has also started the second half very well. Since the All Star break, he has only given up one run in eight appearances and he has only walked one batter.

Ottavino’s ERA since the start of June is 2.45. He also has 12.27 K/9 with a 1.105 WHIP. Excluding May, Ottavino’s ERA is 2.18 and his .946 WHIP.

Ottavino’s FIP for the year is 3.26. That is a very good number. It says that he has been unlucky this year.

Ottavino’s expected batting average, expected slugging, K rate, expected ERA and exit velocity against are all in the top 10 percentile.

The veteran still has elite stuff. When he gets going, he is a weapon out of the Mets bullpen.

Reed Garrett and Sean Reid-Foley will both come up. There will need to be two corresponding moves. Ottavino has made his case to stay on the team. With rosters expanding on September first, the Mets can send players down who have minor league options and bring them back up on 9/1, all while keep the talented vet around.
