Noah Lyles Addresses His Availability For Upcoming Olympic Event

United States sprinter Noah Lyles is currently dealing with the COVID-19 virus, which his mother mentioned he tested positive for two days ago.

Lyles competed in the men's 200-meter final on Thursday and finished the race with a bronze medal. The Florida native clocked in at 19.70 seconds.

His health has been up for debate throughout the past few days following Lyles' second-place finish at 20.08 seconds in the 200-meter semifinals.

The 27-year-old gave an update on his availability for the rest of the Olympic Games, most notably the the men's 4x100m relay.

Lyles believes, at the moment, that it's best for him to be left off the USA team, given his health concerns. He thinks the USA has enough talent to take home the gold, with or without him at the event.

"At the moment, I don't know," Lyles said. "I'm feeling more on the side of letting Team USA do their thing. They've proven with great certainty that they can handle it without me, and if that's the case, coming off today, I'm perfectly fine saying, 'You guys go do your thing. You guys have more than enough speed to be able to handle it and get the gold medal.'"

Lyles was defeated by Botswana's Letsile Tebogo and the United States' Kenneth Bednarek in the 200-meter final. Tebogo clocked in at 19.46 to earn gold, while Bednarek clocked in at 19.62.

He would have a chance to add another medal, having already won a gold in the 100-meter final and a bronze in the 200-meter final, but Lyles' participation in the relay race seems unlikely.

The men's 4x100m relay final is currently scheduled for Aug. 9 at 1:45 p.m. ET.
