The New York Giants lead the Detroit Lions 14-3 at halftime in their preseason opener at MetLife Stadium, thanks to a strong showing by running back Eric Gray and a stout defensive effort.

The game began under rainy conditions, with both teams struggling to move the ball in the first quarter. Drew Lock started at quarterback for the Giants, but after a sluggish start and grabbing at his left side, he was replaced by Tommy DeVito.

Lock's early departure saw the Giants fail to score in the first quarter, as both teams combined for just 20 yards on 12 plays. The Lions managed to take a brief 3-0 lead after a 53-yard field goal by Jake Bates, following an interception by Detroit’s safety Brandon Joseph.

In the second quarter, DeVito found his rhythm. After a shaky start, he led the Giants on a 91-yard drive that ended with a 48-yard touchdown run by second-year running back Eric Gray. Gray continued to be the offensive standout, scoring his second touchdown of the game on a 1-yard rush, following a 16-yard reception by tight end Tyree Jackson that set up the scoring opportunity.

On the defensive side, the Giants were dominant. Dyontae Johnson recorded the team’s first sack, while rookie cornerback Dru Phillips contributed with a tackle for loss. Despite the high expectations, rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers was held without a reception in the first half, but the Giants' defense ensured the Lions couldn't capitalize.

As the teams headed to the locker room, the Giants' lead was secure at 14-3, with the defense showing promise and the offense starting to click, particularly behind the efforts of Gray.
