In their preseason opener at MetLife Stadium, the New York Giants secured a 14-3 victory over the Detroit Lions, fueled by a dominant defensive performance and an effective ground game.
Entering the game with high expectations, rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers drew comparisons to former Giants star Odell Beckham Jr. during to his impressive training camp. However, Nabers was held without a catch, leaving the spotlight to other playmakers on the roster.
The game began under rainy conditions, leading to a sluggish first quarter where both teams combined for just 20 yards on 12 plays. Quarterback Drew Lock started for the Giants but was replaced by Tommy DeVito after grabbing at his left side.
The Lions took an early 3-0 lead on a 53-yard field goal by Jake Bates, but the Giants responded in the second quarter. DeVito found his rhythm, leading a 91-yard drive that culminated in a 48-yard touchdown run by second-year running back Eric Gray. Gray continued to impress, adding a second touchdown on a one-yard rush to extend the Giants' lead.
The Giants’ defense was the real star of the night. They recorded four sacks, with Dyontae Johnson notching the team’s first, and rookie cornerback Dru Phillips making a tackle for loss.
The Lions struggled to find any offensive momentum, going 0-for-4 on fourth down attempts, with the Giants’ defense consistently standing strong, particularly in the red zone.
In the second half, the Giants continued to dominate defensively. The Lions, led by quarterback Hendon Hooker in the third quarter and Nate Sudfeld in the fourth, were unable to break through. Hooker was eventually sidelined with a suspected injury, and the Giants' defense capitalized, forcing turnovers and sacks.
Despite accumulating 10 penalties for 102 yards, the Giants managed to stifle the Lions' offense, allowing just three points throughout the game.
On the offensive side, the Giants’ running game took center stage, with rookie running back Donte Miller stepping up alongside Gray. The Giants totaled 157 rushing yards, with Gray also leading the team in receiving yards with 46.
As the Giants move forward in the preseason, their defense and ground game will continue to be their strengths, even as they await a breakout performance from Nabers.
This victory, while not perfect, showed that the Giants have the depth to compete within their division, though questions remain about their ability to match up against the NFC’s elite teams.
