It was a rainy night in the Meadowlands as the New York Giants opened up their preseason schedule against the Detroit Lions.

Neither the Giants' Daniel Jones nor the Lions' Jared Goff started the game, allowing the backups to shine.

Giants backup Drew Lock started the game, but he would exit the game with an injury in the first quarter. Tommy DeVito came into the game and led two first half touchdown drives, both capped off with touchdown turns by running back Eric Gray.

With under two minutes left in the half, the Lions were driving when Lions quarterback Nate Sudfeld was looking to connect with Kaden Davis on a crossing route. Sudfeld let the ball fly, but Giants cornerback Tre Herndon stepped in front of the pass picking it off at the Giants eight-yard line.

Herndon took off on the return and the Lions pursued, forcing a fumble that was then recovered by Detroit running back Sione Vaki at the Detroit 46. The Lions' drive would stall and the Giants would head into the locker room up 14-3 at halftime.

The second-year running back, Gray, was the star of the first half rushing for 52 yards and two touchdowns.

The name of the game was defense as the Giants stifled the Lions offense all night long forcing five 3-and-outs. The G-men forced seven punts overall and stopped the Lions on fourth down three times to change possessions, twice inside the Giants' five-yard line.

    Final Score: Giants 14 – Lions 3

The Giants ' preseason continues next Saturday, Aug. 17, when they take on the Houston Texans.
