The New England Patriots got their preseason underway on Thursday night in a 17-3 victory over the Carolina Panthers .

Rookie quarterback Drake Maye did not play for long, getting snaps on the second series of the game with the first team and exiting the game after just the one drive.

Despite the limited action, Maye told reporters after the game that he was able to learn a lot. Asked how he could improve upon his performance, the rookie said that managing the nerves was the biggest thing and something he can take further going forward.

"Yeah, I think just enjoying the moment is kind of the biggest thing out there. As a rookie in their first preseason game, I thought I handled the nerves pretty well. Cheering on my teammates, that's the biggest thing, cheering on the guys. Loud on the sidelines, engaged, that's the biggest thing," Maye said . "You know, as a rookie, coming in there, you want to be engaged. Take a look at the iPad, at the plays, other than that, on the field, not a lot happening. Threw a screen, first down moved the chains, but I think on a third down maybe should've moved down the field, had some routes on the chains instead of throwing to the flat. But hey, that's why you watch film."

By the sounds of it, Maye felt like even just the one drive was a huge learning experience for him. Perhaps when the team takes on the Philadelphia Eagles next week, he will be able to get some more game action and continue to develop as a quarterback.
