Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh will serve as an honorary captain for the Wolverines' season opener against Fresno State, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel announced in a recent interview.

Harbaugh led Michigan through an undefeated season capped off by a National Championship victory in 2023. He then left his longtime post as the Wolverines' head coach on a high note, joining the NFL ranks as the Chargers' new sideline leader.

Harbaugh was recently handed a four-year show-cause penalty and a one-year suspension by the NCAA for "unethical conduct" during an investigation into Michigan's alleged violations.

Manuel and University of Michigan clearly aren't too worried about this punishment.

Harbaugh denied any knowledge of Michigan's alleged violations during a press conference earlier this week.

"I do not apologize," Harbaugh said on Monday. "I did not participate. I was not aware nor complicit in those said allegations."

New head coach Sherrone Moore and the Wolverines will look to build off their flawless 2023 campaign this coming season. Following Michigan's season opener against Fresno State, the team has a massive Week 2 matchup against the Texas Longhorns.

The Wolverines will kickoff their 2024 season on August 31.
