The United States 4x100m men's relay team was stunned in the Olympic Games on Friday. Heading into the race as one of the favorites to win gold, the U.S. instead walked away with a disqualification.
Sprinters Christian Coleman and Kenny Bednarek made an inexcusable mistake in the first leg of the race. They bobbled the baton in the first exchange and ultimately collided.
This led to their disqualification from the event, leaving United States fans shocked by the result.
The U.S. team was trending on social media after the race, with many fans bashing the execution of the Americans.
"Handoffs are important in relays. They just can’t seem to make it work," explained one fan.
The Canadian team finished the race as the gold medal winners, crossing the finish line at 37.50. South Africa was right behind Canada, clocking in at 37.57 seconds to earn a silver medal, while Great Britain finished the race at 37.61 seconds to earn bronze.
"I will never understand why our men's 4x100 relay team has issues every. single. olympics," one fan said.
"Time to take the 4x100 out of the Olympics…this can’t happen, ever," said another fan.
Kenneth Bednarek (USA) and Christian Coleman (USA) react after the menís 4x100m relay during the Paris 2024 Olympic Summer Games at Stade de France.
This is now the fifth straight Summer Olympics that the men's 4x100m relay team will leave without having earned a medal. They have not won a medal in the event in 24 years.
Their next opportunity will come on their home turf in Los Angeles, California, for the 2028 Olympic Games.
"You would think that after 4 straight olympics they would get their handoffs sorted? Right?" commenter another.
"The men’s 4x100 is cursed man. 2nd leg left WAY too early," said one fan.
