Cowboys' WR Tolbert Taking Starting Job?

    By Anthony Goss,

The preseason will present opportunity for several Dallas Cowboys either trying to earn their spot on the final roster or move up the depth chart. Third-year receiver Jalen Tolbert falls into that group, positioned with a prime chance in the coming weeks.

Assuming all dominoes fall into place, CeeDee Lamb will be the No. 1 receiver with Brandin Cooks alongside him. That third spot, however, remains one contested and uncertain ahead of the 2024 season. Michael Gallup's departure during the offseason has left that spot up for grabs with several players vying for that role.

Jalen Tolbert appears to have the inside track on that job as a result of his experience in comparison to the rest of the group of receivers on the roster. But his position is not guaranteed and will have to be earned through the preseason action.

However, the South Alabama product has impressed throughout camp not only by making highlight snags but also drawing the respect of his quarterback .

"He's approached this camp with that intensity, with that mindset and he's made exactly those kinda plays practice after practice," Prescott said last week. "I know he's given me tons of confidence in him and I know his confidence is growing and the play-callers have confidence in him to keep feeding him the ball."

Lamb's current holdout and Cooks' expiring contract make the complexion of the Cowboys' receiving room a question beyond this season. Barring any future acquisitions, they will need reliable pieces to emerge from a crop of young talent.

Prescott's confidence in Tolbert reflects a belief that Tolbert has already separated himself and looks prepared to be an immediate contributor in this "Texas Coast" offense.

Nonetheless, the young receiver will have to pass one final test. He has the foundational claim for the third receiver spot but needs a strong preseason campaign to cement his case.
