Letting Mike McDaniel and the Dolphins Have Jaylen Wright Was a Huge Mistake

The Miami Dolphins already had one speedy running back in Raheem Mostert when they spent an early pick in last year's draft on Texas A&M's De'Von Achane, and the presence of both didn't stop them from spending another Day 2 selection on Tennessee's Jaylen Wright this year.

Wright's explosive, big play ability and three-down skill set made him one of the best running back prospects in this year's draft class, and his fit in Mike McDaniel's high-octane offense should terrify opposing defenses.

The former Volunteer is already off to a strong start in his preseason debut, showing off an impressive combination of vision, power and explosiveness that finished with his first touchdown run in a Dolphins uniform:

While some may look at Miami's loaded depth chart at the position and wonder whether or not Wright is going to get enough touches to make a big impact as a rookie, it's important to remember than Mostert is 32 years old, and has dealt with injuries throughout his career. Even Achane missed time during his rookie season with a knee injury.

If either player ahead of him misses any time this season, Wright is the kind of talent who will take over their role and be in danger of never giving it back.

And even if all three stay healthy for the whole year, Wright is simply too talented to keep off the field, and no team spends a third-round pick on a running back unless they're planning to use him plenty.

Sure, it's just one preseason game, but if you go back and look at Wright's college film, you'll see that he's always been this dangerous of a playmaker, and NFL defenses are about to find that out in 2024 and beyond.
