The Philadelphia Phillies (69-47) entered Friday night looking to secure a .500 or better record on their west coast trip. The Arizona Diamondbacks (64-53), who entered Friday with a Major League best 31-21 record after a loss, had other plans.

    Nelson Was Nasty

The Diamondbacks sent a left hander to the mound on Friday in Ryne Nelson (8-6, 4.51 ERA). Over 7 1/3 innings, Nelson was absolutely nasty, and he overpowered Phillies batters for the majority of his outing.

Nelson threw 97 pitches on Friday, 72 of which were strikes. He generated 14 whiffs, and 14 called strikes to give him a 29 percent CSW rate.

While his final line does include two earned runs, the second run was given up by a reliever after Nelson allowed the baserunner on a walk.

Nelson's final line for Friday read 7 1/3 innings, three hits, two runs, both earned, one walk, and nine strikeouts.

    Notable Stats

    • Alec Bohm broke up Nelson's perfect game in the fifth inning with his 42nd double of the season.
    • Zack Wheeler (11-5, 2.78 ERA) made his 250th career start, the 20th active pitcher to reach 250 starts.
    • Bryce Harper hit his 26th home run of the season in the seventh inning. It was only his fourth home run in 20 games since the All Star Break.
    • Johan Rojas tied the game in the top of the eighth with an RBI double, scoring Nick Castellanos from first.
    • Phillies defense turned three double plays for the second game in a row, giving them six on the series with two games remaining.

    WPA Leader of the Night

Friday's WPA leader of the night is Diamondbacks rookie catcher Adrian Del Castillo . Playing in only his second Major League game, Del Castillo played like he has been in the Majors for years.

Del Castillo, 24, entered Friday's game with a 1-for-3 career line with one walk, one double one RBI, and one strikeout. On Friday, Del Castillo would bat 3-for-4 with two singles, two RBI, one strikeout, and a walk-off home run, the first home run of his career. Del Castillo is the first Arizona Diamondback to have his first career Major League home run be a walk off.

Del Castillo would end the night with a 47.9 WPA.

    Next Up

Next up for the Phillies is game three of this series on Saturday. The first pitch of Saturday's game is scheduled for 8:10 PM EST. The game will be broadcast on NBC Sports Philadelphia and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Phillies fans can listen to the game on 94 WIP or WTTM 1680.
