Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd and Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown are making waves off the court with their latest initiative. The two Oakland natives, recently inducted into the Oakland Hall of Fame, have announced the launch of The XChange, a national nonprofit aimed at bridging the racial wealth gap in their hometown.

Brown, fresh off his Finals MVP performance with the Celtics, spoke passionately about the project.

“What I noticed through the inequalities in Boston is inequalities that are glaring all over the U.S., which led me here to Oakland,” said Brown, who considers the city his second home after attending the University of California, Berkeley. “Oakland is rich in its history and tradition of entrepreneurship, business, togetherness, and organization. It’s an honor to announce this initiative here.”

Kidd, known for his commitment to community development, highlighted the importance of representation and opportunity.

“When I talk about my women’s program for basketball, I thought it was time for the Bay Area to be represented,” Kidd said, noting that his program has already secured nine scholarship offers from UC Berkeley.

The Mavericks coach praised Brown’s efforts.

“What Jaylen Brown is doing here, not just in Boston but across the country, is incredible,” Kidd said. He emphasized the need to spotlight positive initiatives amidst the often negative narratives on social media.

The XChange aims to leverage these two NBA figures' star power and resources to create meaningful change in Oakland. While specific program details are yet to be released, the initiative is expected to focus on economic empowerment, education, and entrepreneurship within the community.

As The XChange takes shape, the basketball world will be watching closely to see how this initiative might serve as a model for similar programs across the country. With Kidd and Brown at the helm, expectations are high for this Oakland-based endeavor to make a significant difference in addressing the racial wealth gap.
