In their preseason opener against the Detroit Lions , the New York Giants showcased a level of physicality that head coach Brian Daboll had set as a priority for the 2024 season.

The 14-3 victory on Thursday night was a significant step in Daboll's ongoing effort to mold a tougher, more aggressive Giants team, a marked improvement from last year when the Lions outmuscled the Giants in joint practices and a preseason game.

Daboll, who had emphasized the importance of physical play in team meetings, credited the changes in personnel and coaching staff for the noticeable difference on the field. "We’ve put a high premium on that," Daboll said . "This is a tough game, and you have to be mentally and physically tough. We’ve added a lot of new pieces that have helped contribute to that."

The Giants' offensive line, bolstered by a strong ground game, rushed for 155 yards, averaging 5.7 yards per carry. Defensively, they limited the Lions to just 228 total yards, with only 78 of those coming on traditional run plays. Special teams also played a crucial role, shutting down the Lions' return game under the NFL 's new kickoff rules.

Daboll highlighted the impact of new coordinators Shane Bowen (defense) and Michael Ghobrial (special teams) in instilling this physical mindset within their units. "We’re a work in progress, but we’re going to try to be physical," Daboll noted , stressing the importance of continuing to build on this foundation as the season approaches.

With upcoming practices and preseason games against the Houston Texans and New York Jets , Daboll and his staff are focused not just on player evaluations but on maintaining and enhancing the team's physical edge.

"We need to continue to lean on the physical aspect of our game," Daboll emphasized . "It starts in the trenches, but it’s about everyone contributing to that physical style of play."
