Free agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore, maybe the most accomplished player still on the shelf, is traveling this weekend for a tryout with the Minnesota Vikings, per multiple reports.

Gilmore was with the Dallas Cowboys last year and was a top contributor to that playoff team. tells me he’s flying out on Sunday to visit with the #Vikings on Monday.

Yes, the Dallas Cowboys secondary has two All-Pros right now with Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland. That makes this different from a year ago, when the Cowboys acquired Stephon Gilmore via a trade.

"Gilly'' was good here. So why does he remain unsigned as a free agent?

“Honestly, I’m still being patient and staying ready until teams see what they have in training camp,'' Gilmore said. “But you mean to tell me among 32 teams that there are 64 starting corners that are better than me? I don’t think that.''

That's valid. So is Gilmore's remark that, "If teams want to win, I think they should sign the best players.'' ... a mention that could be directed straight at the Cowboys.

But ... this thing isn't happening in a vacuum.

Is Cowboys Dak Prescott NFL's Fifth-Best QB?

Gilmore was a solid starter for the Cowboys a season ago with 68 total tackles and two interceptions. With the emergence of Bland to team up with a rehabbing Diggs, though, Dallas can argue that it's set at corner.

Depth? That'd be good. But how much should Dallas (in this "Blow It Up'' time) be expected to pay for depth? Is Gilmore an upgrade over Jourdan Lewis? Maybe. But Lewis plays the slot, so in that scenario, Gilmore would return and Bland would move to the slot.

Not bad, but ... Lewis signed cheap - one-year, $2.6 million.

Gilmore, obviously - as he's accustomed to making $10 million APY - isn't interested in doing the same.
