Alex Morgan, USWNT Fans Crown Alyssa Naeher After Epic Olympics

    By Jack Winter,

The United States Women's National Team defeated Brazil 1-0 in the Olympic final on Saturday, winning its first gold medal since 2012.

Forward Mallory Swanson scored the deciding goal in the 57th minute off a perfect leading ball from Korbin Albert. Stars Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman and Naomi Girma certainly made their presence felt for the Americans, too.

But it was goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher whose legend grew most on Saturday.

Not only did she pitch a third straight shutout, but had another instant-classic save in the waning moments against Brazil—similar late-match heroism she put forth vs. Germany in the semifinal.

Among those left awestruck by yet another epic performance from Naeher? Former Team USA star Alex Morgan, not to mention fans across the globe.

Naeher becomes the only player in women's soccer history with a shutout in Olympic and World Cup finals. Five years before blanking Brazil in Paris, she shutout the Netherlands to help the USWNT take the 2019 World Cup.

Expect Naeher's name to live alongside American soccer legends like Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, Carli Lloyd and Mia Hamm forever. She has a case as the best goalkeeper in program history.

As for how the USWNT will effectively replace the 36-year-old once her career finally comes to a close? Let's just focus on the United States winning gold before borrowing that trouble.
