Cleveland Browns rookie linebacker Nathaniel Watson was forced to exit the team’s 2024 preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers after suffering a quad injury in the third quarter.

Watson, who had been receiving significant playing time due to the absence of Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and other injuries within the linebacker corps, hobbled to the sideline, pointing at his quad, prompting immediate concern among the Browns' coaching staff. Following his exit, Watson was officially listed as questionable to return.

The injury occurred following a routine tackle, where Watson quickly showed signs of discomfort. The Browns' medical team tended to Watson on the field before trainers escorted him off. The extent of the injury remains unclear, and the Browns have yet to provide further updates. Given Watson's increased role in the defense, the team will likely proceed cautiously as they await a full evaluation.

Selected in the sixth round (206th overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft, Watson brought a strong collegiate resume from Mississippi State, where he appeared in 57 games with 46 starts.

He led the SEC in both tackles (137) and sacks (10) in 2023, becoming the first player in conference history to do so in the same season. His standout performance earned him a spot as a finalist for the Butkus Award and earned him the honor of being recognized as the AP SEC Defensive Player of the Year.

With Watson’s status now uncertain, the Browns may face challenges maintaining their linebacker depth as they prepare for the regular season. The team and its fans will closely monitor Watson's recovery, hoping for a swift return to the field.
