The saga surrounding Jordan Chiles' bronze medal may be far from over.

The American gymnast earned a bronze medal in the floor exercise at the Paris Olympics after her judges requested a review and a late change bumped her to third place. But a top Olympic court ruled that the review was requested four seconds beyond the deadline, reversing the scoring change and moving Chiles back into fifth place.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Sunday that it would strip  Chiles of the bronze medal and award it to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu instead.

Enter the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, which announced after the decision that it would appeal the latest ruling.

"There were critical errors in both the initial scoring by the Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the subsequent [Court of Arbitration for Sport] appeal process that needed to be addressed," the organization wrote in a statement.

"The initial error happened in the scoring by FIG, and the second error was during the CAS appeal process, where the USOPC was not given adequate time or notice to effectively challenge the decision. As a result, we were not properly represented or afforded the opportunity to present our case comprehensively."

Chiles, who wrote on Saturday that she would be taking a break from social media, had not yet issued a statement on the decision.
