Cowboys Record 3 INTs, Tied with Rams 6-6 - 4Q Live Game Updates

The Dallas Cowboys open the 2024 preseason on the West Coast on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium

In some ways, this has been your typical Cowboys offseason. Dallas enters the preseason with questions about its offense and its quarterback as well as the defense with a new defensive coordinator in Mike Zimmer.

And in some ways, it's not your typical Cowboys offseason. Several key players enter the year without the benefit of a contract beyond 2024, most notably, quarterback Dak Prescott. This also applies to the entire coaching staff.

Prescott is not expected to play on Sunday against the Rams, meaning Cooper Rush and Trey Lance will split time - and Lance desperately needs a good showing .

"I'm going into this game the same as I've gone into every other game my whole entire life — college, high school,” Lance said. “I don't think that I'll put too much extra in it. I'm not gonna play any harder than I have in the past, or not harder ... Big game for me. Big game for us, so I'm excited to go out there and play well."

Coach Mike McCarthy and the Cowboys have posted three straight 12-win seasons, but have faltered in the postseason.

For the Rams, there will be plenty of players to watch and storylines to follow. Quarterback Stetson Bennett is back in the fold after taking his rookie season off while dealing with personal issues, and he's expected to see playing time this preseason.

Rams coach Sean McVay said quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo won't see playing time this preseason unless he asks for it.

Defensive end Jared Verse has excelled in Rams training camp and has stood up with some of the Cowboys' big men in joint practices, sometimes even outplaying them.

The Rams will take the ball first to start the game.

FIRST QUARTER: Cowboys 3, Rams 3

The Aubrey kick goes into the end zone for a touchback.

Scott runs up the middle for three, then Bennett passes short across the middle for Whittington for 13 and a first down.

Scott runs off left end for two, then Bennts hits Smith for four out of bounds at the DAL 48. On 3rd and 4 from the DAL 48, Scott runs for three off right tackle. On 4th and 1, Bennett scrambles for five out of bounds at the DAL 40.

Scott takes the ball for four yards to the DAL 36, then PENALTY on LA-B.Limmer, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at DAL 36 - No Play. On 2nd and 11, Bennett passes short across the middle for Whittington who runs open to the right sideline for 31 yards and a first down.

Scott runs up the middle for two to the DAL 8, then Bennett his Scott in the right flat for a loss of one. On 3rd and Goal from the DAL 9, Bennett passes incomplete for Allen in the end zone, Markquese Bell with the perfect coverage.

RAMS FIELD GOAL: On 4th and 8 from the DAL 9, Karty is good from 28 for a 3-0 lead over the Cowboys with 8:27 left in the first quarter. The scoring drive goes 61 yards in 12 plays and takes 6:33 off the clock.

The Karty kick goes into the end zone for a touchback to the DAL 30.

Dowdle takes the Cooper Rush handoff off right tackle for nine, then Dowdle runs again up the middle for three and a first down.

Rush passes deep down the left sideline for Jalen Brooks complete for 43 yards to the LA 15.

Dowdle takes the Rush handoff off left tackle for two, then Rush finds Moreno-Cropper for one. On 3rd and 7, Rush passes incomplete to Moreno-Cropper in the end zone on a poorly thrown ball while under pressure.

COWBOYS FIELD GOAL: Aubrey is good from 30 yards for a 3-3 tie with the Rams with 5:20 left in the first quarter. The scoring drive goes 58 yards in seven plays and takes 3:07 off the clock.

Aubrey's kick goes 64 yards to the LA 1, returned by Smith for 23 years to the LA 24.

Stetson Bennett is still under center for the Rams.

COWBOYS INTERCEPTION: On 3rd and 6 from the LA 28, Bennett passes short middle for Whittington, INTERCEPTED by Markquese Bell at the LA 44 with no return. First down, Cowboys with 4:21 left in the first quarter.

Trey Lance is in at quarterback for the Cowboys.

Lance passes short right to Brooks for six, then Davis runs up the middle for three. On 3rd and 1 from the LA 31, Davis carries up the middle for four and a first down.

Lance misses Luke Schoonmaker on an out pattern to the sideline incomplete.

Lance misses Schoonmaker again, this time deep in the end zone, overthrowing him by eight yards. On 3rd and 10 from the LA 31, Lance scrambles for 19 yards to the LA 12 for a first down.

Lance connects with Malik Davis short across the middle for a gain of six to the LA 6, then Davis runs off left end for a loss of one. On 3rd and 5 from the LA 7, Lance passes complete to Moreno-Cropper for four to the LA 3. The Trey Lance pass took the receiver out of bounds or it could've been a touchdown.

COWBOYS TURNOVER ON DOWNS: On 4th and 1 from the LA 3, Lance passes incomplete to a wide-open Moreno-Cropper, overthrowing him out of the corner of the end zone. The Rams take over with 0:05 left in the first quarter.

Scott runs up the middle for a gain of one.

END OF THE FIRST QUARTER

SECOND QUARTER: Cowboys 6, Rams 6

Bennett passes short to the right side for Smith for a gain of three. On 3rd and 6 from the LA 7, Bennett connects with Smith on the left sideline for 10 yards and a first down. PENALTY on DAL - E. Scott, Unnecessary Roughness, 15 yards, enforced at LA 17.

Bennett passes complete to Smith, who found a hole in the Cowboys zone defense, for 11 yards to the LA 43 and another first down.

Scott runs off right tackle for seven, then Scott carries again up the middle for 14 and a first down. Scott ran 10 yards before he was ever touched by a Cowboys defender.

Evans runs off left tackle for two, then Bennett hits Smith on the right side for five more. On 3rd and 3 from the DAL 29, Evans attempts to run up the middle, and is stuffed by the Dallas defense.

RAM FOURTH DOWN CONVERSION: On 4th and 2, Evans stumbles up the middle and crawls for three yards and a first down.

The Rams' current drive started at their 3-yard line.

Scott runs off left tackle for four, then Bennett passes incomplete to Whittington on the right sideline. Dallas got lucky that Bennett didn't see the tight end wide open 20 yards downfield. On 3rd and 6, the Cowboys blitz and Bennett misses Johnson in the end zone.

RAMS FIELD GOAL: Karty is good from 39 for a 6-3 lead over the Cowboys with 9:13 left in the first half. The scoring drive goes 76 yards in 14 plays and takes 5;52 off the clock.

Lance throws incomplete to Durden on the right side, then Lance hits Moreno-Cropper for nine to the DAL 39. On 3rd and 1 from the DAL 39, Malik Davis powers his way forward for two and a first down.

Cooper Beebe is in at center for the Cowboys.

Davis is dropped in the backfield for a loss of two - looks like a missed assignment on the o-line - then Lance hits Durden deep down the left sideline for 16 and a first down.

Davis carries off left tackle for four, then Lance hits John Stephens - fresh off the ACL tear last year - for 11 and a first down.

Lance finds Moreno-Cropper for 12 on a nice throw across the middle. Lance threaded the needle with that throw.

Lance throws incomplete across the middle to Flournoy, who drops the ball, and then Lance misses Davis in the right flat. On 3rd and 10 from the LAR 18, Lance misses Davis again in the right flat. Davis dropped it but he would've been short of the first down anyway.
