NBA analyst and former player Kendrick Perkins is turning the Olympics into the latest benchmark for the ongoing debate over whether LeBron James or Michael Jordan is the greatest player in NBA history.

Perkins argues that with his recent gold medal victory, James solidifies his claim as the “most important player in basketball.”

On Saturday, Team USA, led by James, defeated France 98-87 to secure their fifth consecutive gold medal. Perkins points out that while Jordan has only two Olympic gold medals, James’ current tally of three should be considered in this comparison.

“He’s one up on Jordan right now,” Perkins stated. “He’s been my G.O.A.T., but every time he gets one up on MJ, he has three gold medals. MJ has two. This is why we watch him; he’s the most important player in basketball.”

James’ impact was undeniable throughout the Olympics. He was consistently a standout performer, averaging 14.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, 8.5 assists, and 1.3 steals across six games.

His exceptional play earned him MVP honors for the 2024 Paris Games and a spot on the Olympic All-Star starting five alongside teammate Stephen Curry, Serbia's Nikola Jokic, France's Victor Wembanyama, and Germany's Dennis Schroder.

Perkins highlights that James’ achievements are particularly impressive given he is 39 years old.

“Everything LeBron James did at this age is a beautiful thing to watch at the Olympics,” Perkins commented.

While LeBron may have the edge over Jordan in Olympic gold medals, Jordan leads in NBA championships.

Jordan has six titles and an undefeated Finals record. LeBron on the other hand has only four championships and has lost in six Finals appearances.

While the G.O.A.T. debate may never be resolved, it's evident that both Jordan and James have solidified their places as two of the greatest players in NBA history.
