The first two seasons of the Shane Beamer era at South Carolina showed promise. The Gamecocks went to two straight bowl games and ended the 2022 season by crushing No. 5 Tennessee and beating rival No. 7 Clemson on the road.

In the following season, the Gamecocks were unable to maintain their momentum and ended the year with a 5-7 record. During his radio show, ESPN's Paul Finebaum was asked by a listener if he believed the Gamecocks could achieve six wins this season. He responded by saying that he can't see South Carolina winning more than five games.

"It's tricky but I'm not wild about this team," Finebaum said. "You're at Clemson, you're at Oklahoma, you're at Kentucky and you're at Alabama; I don't like them in any of those games."

South Carolina Gamecocks defensive back Nick Emmanwori (21), linebacker Debo Williams (0), defensive back DQ Smith (1) and wide receiver Ahmarean Brown (10) lead the team onto the field prior to a game against the Clemson Tigers at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Finebaum believes that Vanderbilt could be a crucial game for the Gamecocks. He is not optimistic about South Carolina's chances against Missouri, but he thinks the game against Texas A&M could go either way. After that, he doesn't believe there are many winnable games ahead.

It may be the second consecutive season that the Gamecocks will not go to a bowl game.
