Zimmer Play-Calling 'Blows Away' Cowboys

Through one preseason game, the move from Dan Quinn to Mike Zimmer this offseason looked like a positive change for the Dallas Cowboys . Of course, that is an extremely small sample size without the entirety of the defensive pieces at their disposal.
But enough contributors who should see considerable time through the regular season suited up on Sunday for some limited run. Second-year linebacker DeMarvion Overshown was one of those players and he noticed a difference .

Overshown was take aback by Zimmer's style. The defensive coordinator opted for a feel of the game in multiple instances, not looking at his play sheet and relying on what he saw on the field.
A major difference underlined between the two coaches is their physical location during the game. Zimmer roamed the sidelines through Sunday's game while Quinn spent his tenure in the booth, a bit removed from the action.
There's no fault to either approach and clearly Quinn's philosophy worked with Cowboys. However, the players who have appeared on this defense in recent years will have a different connection in-game with their defensive coordinator.
The results from mostly second- and third-string players were encouraging, especially considering the team tallied four interceptions in the game. Unfortunately, Dallas' starters and reserves will have such ill-advised passes lobbed their way throughout the season.
Regardless, Sunday showed that the Cowboys can embrace Zimmer's style while maintaining the potential for the game-altering plays that became a theme over the last few seasons.
A true evaluation of this group will not be had until the starters take stage in the regular season. But there is plenty to like about this defense coming out of the first week of the preseason.
