New Backup in Buffalo? Why the Bills Need a Stronger QB Behind Josh Allen

    By Colin Miller,

Even though the Buffalo Bills have Josh Allen signed for at least four more years, the team could consider bringing in a new backup quarterback to play behind Allen in case anything happens to their franchise cornerstone.

It may not be a scenario that Bills fans even want to consider, but when looking around the league, it's clear that having a capable backup QB can only help the team. With superstars such as Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Lamar Jackson, and Matthew Stafford missing time in recent years, there's no way to predict what could happen over the span of a grueling NFL season.

The team currently has veteran Mitchell Trubisky signed as the backup for Allen, but after a mediocre performance against the Chicago Bears in the team's first preseason game (94 total yards in about two quarters), and a disappointing NFL career to this point, the team may need someone with a bit more success at the position.

Multiple veterans with playoff experience; including Ryan Tannehill, Brian Hoyer, and A.J. McCarron, are all current free agents that the Bills could bring in to compete for the backup position. Although none of them have led a team to a Super Bowl themselves, they all bring experience from winning cultures that could be valuable in the Bills locker room.

By the way: No, signing Ben DiNucci as the third-stringer/temp doesn't could.

Whether or not the Bills really will bring in a new backup for Allen remains to be seen. At least for now, fans can expect Trubisky to take the field behind Allen when Buffalo takes on the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, and hope for a stronger performance.
