Haason Reddick Demands Trade, Jets Not Flinching: Riggs Report

    By Wil Riggs,

Back in March, the New York Jets pulled off a move to enhance their pass rush and solidify an already dominant defense when they sent a 2026 conditional third-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for edge rusher Haason Reddick.

Reddick promptly demanded a new contract - or maybe better said, he assumed one was part of the plan - and missed all of the OTAs, mandatory minicamps, and now two-plus weeks of training camp holding out.

And now we know as of Monday that Reddick had demanded a trade from the Jets.

Throughout this whole process, the Jets and general manger Joe Douglas have been unwavering in their stance. Show up to camp, and we can engage in negotiations. Reddick has refused to show up, so the Jets have broken off discussions.

Following the reports that Reddick had demanded a trade, the Jets and Douglas released an official statement on the situation.

“We have informed Haason that we will not trade him, the he is expected to be here with his teammates, and that he will continue to be fined per the CBA if he does not report,” the statement read. “Since the trade discussions back in march we have been clear, direct, and consistent with our position. Our focus will remain on the guys have here as we prepare for the regular season,”

The former No. 13 overall pick is under contract for this year, and is said to be “serious about his money.” But ... If he was truly serious about his money, he would have showed up to camp instead of giving away money in fines. His fine total now tops $1 million and counting.

At this point, the only real thing keeping him from showing up is pride. He has held out this long and, we suppose, feels he might lose credibility or the respect of his peers if he shows up without an extension in place.

The Jets have made their position known, so the ball is in Reddick’s court.

It’s high time teams hold players accountable for themselves and their decisions. The Jets showed good faith when trading for Reddick, who said he would show up and play for them. ... again, maybe with some sort of understanding ...

But almost as soon as the trade was made, Reddick seemed to put things in reverse. New York will argue that went back on everything he said in order to force the Jets’ hand.

Douglas and his team are standing on principal, as they should.

Keep in mind - and see if you find this as bothersome as we do - initially, Reddick swore was excited to be a Jet.

"Whatever happens, I'm going to be happy," Reddick said in his introductory news conference with the Jets. "I'm going to give my all, no matter what. That's just who I am as a person."

At the end of the day, the Jets expect Reddick to be a man of his word, as do the fans.
