Fast-rising Twins prospect Zebby Matthews to make MLB debut on Tuesday: report

What a rise it’s been for Minnesota Twins prospect Zebby Matthews.

The 24-year-old former eighth round pick, who started this season at High-A Cedar Rapids, is reportedly getting called up to the majors to make his MLB debut on Tuesday.

Baseball America ranks Matthews as the Twins’ fifth-best prospect and top pitching prospect while MLB Pipeline ranks him sixth and second, respectively.

Matthews has been incredible this year. After getting promoted to Double-A Wichita in May, he posted a 1.95 ERA with a .180 batting average against and 63 strikeouts in 55.1 innings, earning himself a promotion to Triple-A St. Paul last month . He’s struggled more there, giving up 12 runs in 19 innings, but with the Twins struggling with injuries to Joe Ryan and Chris Paddack, Matthews is getting the call.

Overall, he’s posted a 2.60 ERA with 114 strikeouts and only seven walks in 97 innings across three levels this season, sporting one of the best walk rates in baseball.

Even if he only gets a spot start and the Twins turns to Louie Varland — who pitched pretty well on Friday — after Tuesday, it’s still an incredible rise for Matthews, and he’ll be a big part of the Twins’ future.
