Mavs' Kyrie Irving Belongs to a Prestigious Statistical Club

If not for the years of questionable off-court decisions and injuries before joining the Dallas Mavericks, Kyrie Irving would rank higher than he already does in the eyes of the basketball world. Notwithstanding the multiple setbacks in the Australias native's career, Irving belongs to a prestigious group of NBA legends in a specific season-long stat.

Although not the first season of Irving's dark-cloud days, the 2020-21 campaign began the destruction of the Brooklyn Nets. Irving played 54 games, mainly missing contests due to not obliging by a New York law-enforced vaccination proof to attend games and events. Irving missed 13 home games due to the aforementioned enforcement.

However, Irving accomplished an all-time stat despite a distracting and possibly chemistry-damaging campaign for the Nets.

According to Statmuse , in NBA history, four players have the highest points per game on a 50/40/90 club: field goal percentage, three-point percentage, and free throw percentage.

    • Steph Curry 30.1 points per game
    • Larry Bird 29.9 points per game
    • Kevin Durant 29.1 points per game
    • Kevin Durant 28.1 points per game
    • Larry Bird 28.1 points per game
    • Kyrie Irving 26.9 points per game

In one of Irving's more chaotic seasons, he ranked among some of the greatest players in basketball history.

Although Irving's career is riddled with questionable comments and decisions, he has since matured and compartmentalized opinions and necessary stances more effectively while being with the Mavs.

Irving nearly entered the 50/40/90 club again, missing it narrowly by recording a .497 field goal percentage in the 2023-24 season. Irving and Luka Doncic are among the strongest backcourts in the league. Following a strong offseason, expectations heighten following a Mavs NBA Finals campaign. Doncic will need his running mate for a chance to repeat the magical run from the last postseason.
