Greg McElroy Hints At Potential Quarterback Controversy For Major College Football Program

The quarterback position can make or break your team in some cases. It was a massive problem for the Nebraska Cornhuskers last season, who had 16 interceptions and 10 touchdowns combined from its quarterbacks. On top of the interceptions, Nebraska had 31 total turnovers of offense in 2023.

In a recent edition of "Always College Football," Greg McElroy talked about how the quarterback room is shaping up at Nebraska based on some information he had heard from fall camp. McElroy revealed that veteran QB Heinrich Haarburg could be the starter in Lincoln at the beginning of the year.

"...The other thing I'm hearing is don't rule out in the preseason Heinrich Haarburg on being the starter early in the year," McElroy said. "He's a veteran. Granted, he doesn't have the upside of some of the other guys. That's to be expected, but what killed this team last year? That was 31 turnovers."

The QB controversy may not be what Nebraska fans want to hear. The team secured the commitment of former five-star QB Dylan Raiola. Raiola was the No. 3 QB in the 2024 class, per the On3 Industry Rankings .

Raiola also has ties to the program. Dylan's father is former Nebraska offensive lineman Dominic Raiola, and the quarterback's uncle, Donovan Raiola, is the program's offensive line coach.

Having multiple quarterbacks see the field this season would not be unusual for Nebraska. Last season, the Cornhuskers had Jeff Sims, Chubba Purdy, and Haarburg get playing time under center.

Regardless of who suits up under center for Nebraska, the program has been searching for its first bowl game appearance since 2016. Nebraska last played in the Music City Bowl against the Tennessee Volunteers that season.

Nebraska faces the UTEP Miners to open the year on Aug. 31.
