Despite a 20-17 loss to the New York Jets in their preseason opener, the Washington Commanders saw promising performances from several roster hopefuls, with tight end Ben Sinnott leading the charge.

Sinnott, a 2024 second-round draft pick, showcased his potential with a standout performance that has significantly bolstered his chances of securing a spot on the final roster.

Sinnott was the third-highest graded player for the Commanders in the preseason opener, earning an impressive 87.2 grade from Pro Football Focus ( PFF ). This makes him the highest-graded offensive draft pick for Washington in Week 1 of the preseason. Sinnott's performance was highlighted by three receptions for 57 yards, with 41 of those yards coming after the catch, demonstrating his ability to gain crucial yards and stretch the field.

In the second quarter, Sinnott’s 44-yard seam route catch was a standout moment, showcasing both his physicality and route-running ability. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn noted the importance of seeing players perform in game situations, particularly when it comes to physicality, which is difficult to fully assess in practice settings.

“It was good to see Sinnott stretching the field in the passing game,” Quinn said . “I had seen quite a bit of it in the running game, so to see some of that, I was pleased with that.”

Quinn had previously expressed his optimism about Sinnott's potential, particularly in contested catch situations, which can be a crucial factor in NFL success.

“Sometimes you look for that in one-on-ones. How’s it going to go in the NFL ? There’s so many man or man-like defenses where you stay attached to somebody,” Quinn explained . “To see him fight and compete for these close catches that could go either way. He’s done a good job with that. So, I’m really excited to see where he goes.”
