Just weeks before kickoff of the 2024 season, Kentucky received some brutal news, as projected starting running back Chip Trayanum has broken his hand, according to Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio.

Jones tweeted out the news Tuesday morning.

"Sources tell KSR that UK RB Chip Trayanum has broken his hand and will miss 3-4 weeks and likely 1-2 games," he reported on X.

Trayanum was one of several important additions for the Wildcats via the transfer portal, and he was set to be the bell cow ball carrier for the UK offense. He certainly still can be a huge factor in the RB room, but he'll just have to overcome a couple-week setback before getting on the field.

Kentucky now looks to a versatile senior in Demie Sumo-Karngbaye, who played a little bit last season after transferring in from NC State but will now see a huge spike in his role. Meanwhile, youngsters like Jamarion Wilcox, Jason Patterson and Tovani Mizell will all be called upon as depth.

Trayanum arrived in Lexington by way of Arizona State and then Ohio State, spending two seasons at each stop. He racked up a grand total of 1,156 rushing yards throughout his four years, including 373 yards and three touchdowns in 2023 for the Buckeyes.
