Is Browns' Third-Round Pick A Surprising Cut Candidate?

    By Wil Riggs,

Back in 2022, the Cleveland Browns selected receiver David Bell out of Purdue with the No. 99 overall pick in the third round. They were hoping that he would add some firepower to their offense, but in the two seasons since he has only hauled in 38 catches for 381 yards and three touchdowns.

    Not exactly spectacular numbers.

The acquisition of receiver Jerry Jeudy and the selection of Jamari Thrash in this year's draft continue to push David Bell down the depth chart. At this current point, he is injured and unable to establish himself on the roster.

Bleacher Report published an article naming Bell as a cut candidate for the Browns.

“While the Purdue product didn't possess elite athletic traits entering the 2022 draft, he carried a good combination of size (6'0", 212 lbs), play strength, body control and proven production—he amassed 1,286 receiving yards in his final year as a Boilermaker,” B/R writes.

“Bell suffered a quad injury in the preseason opener, which could make it difficult for him to make an impression before final cuts. Releasing the 23-year-old would save just under $1.2 million in cap space, which is a sizeable amount if the third-year receiver isn't destined to see the field.”

If Bell is waived, we believe some teams would give the receiver an opportunity. He has shown flashes, but he just hasn’t been able to sustain any type of momentum.

As the Browns continue through training camp and the preseason, he has to get back on the field and show something if he wants to remain on the team. If he doesn’t, his time in Cleveland is likely over.
