Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs' hamstring injury could mean he's out until Week 1

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs left practice early Monday night due to what was initially reported by the team as a "leg injury" but later revealed to be a hamstring issue.

The update was provided by ESPN's Adam Schefter, who said he doesn't "know the extent" of the hamstring injury while on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday.

"I will guess, we will not see Jahmyr Gibbs the rest of the summer and we will prepare to see him on opening night against the Los Angeles Rams," Schefter said. "That would be my guess, a guess on a hamstring injury."

While it remains unknown the severity of the injury, it makes sense for the Lions to handle the situation delicately as three more preseason games and weeks are left and Gibbs isn't in competition or needing to be rushed back out on the field at this time.

Gibbs, the 12th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has a history of hamstring injuries. He missed two games last season and had been dealing with an undisclosed injury that limited him this offseason and training camp.

The first-year Pro Bowler rushed for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns last season and also had 316 receiving yards and a receiving score.

David Montgomery is expected to be the lead back and potentially handle more of a workload if the Lions won't have Gibbs extending into the regular season.

The Lions also had its two top picks from this year's draft — Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. — leave practice on Monday with injuries. Arnold suffered an upper body injury and Rakestraw left with an ankle injury, the team said.
