Lions waive hometown kid DaRon Gilbert, add cornerback depth

One of the fun storylines of Detroit Lions training camp is over.

The team officially waived hometown kid DaRon Gilbert — who went to Brother Rice High School and joined the team as an undrafted free against out of Northern Illinois — with an injury designation.

It comes a day after Lions head coach Dan Campbell said Gilbert tweaked something, although he didn’t specify what the injury is.

The club has already added a couple of linebackers in recent days and, with the club struggling with some injuries in the secondary, signed cornerback Essang Bassey, who has split time between the Broncos and Chargers over the last four seasons. He's appeared in 42 career NFL games, including 15 last season.

The good news is the injuries to rookies Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. don’t appear to be serious but Bassey will still provide more depth as they recover.
