Reggie Miller Compared to Current Three-Point Shooter

After the Golden State Warriors and Klay Thompson broke up following a 13-year relationship, the five-time All-Star rebounded with the Dallas Mavericks. Former Indiana Pacers small forward Jonathan Bender projected what to expect from the four-time NBA champion in his new role.

Bender told Brandon Robinson of Scoopb.com that Thompson could play a similar role to late 1990s Reggie Miller. The former Pacers forward compared Miller and Thompson's elite ability to shoot right after coming from an off-ball screen.

However, Thompson said he doesn't need much of a screen to get a good look. Although the two all-time elite three-point shooters mirror each other statistically, Bender claimed Thompson is more comparable to Ray Allen.

“I would put Klay more closer to Ray Allen as far as his release; as far as his quick release, as far as coming off screens," Bender said.

Bender also said Miller moved more off the ball than Thompson and Allen. Miller didn't play for a team known for its three-point shooting outside of himself. The franchise cornerstone worked more than most players of his stature to get the ball.

Bender detailed how Miller exerted maximum effort coming off curl and fade screens for shots, whereas Thompson benefitted from Stephen Curry's presence.

Miller ranks fifth all-time in three-point shots at 2560, but Thompson could pass him in the 2024-25 season. Thompson is only 79 three-point shots away from tying the Pacers legend.
