Should Commanders Be Worried About Rookie QB Jayden Daniels' Size?

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels checks in at 6-4 and 210 pounds, and yes ... His slender frame was a red flag for some teams leading up to the NFL draft.

Nonetheless, Commanders selected Daniels with the No. 2 overall pick. Daniels has exceeded all expectations and is in line to be named the regular season starter in Washington.

While Daniels continues to progress and impress, some believe his slender frame is still an issue.

"The biggest challenge, I think, for the staff will be working with him to avoid taking big hits on his slender frame without taking away what he brings to the table in the run game, something that’s easy on paper but tough to put into practice," Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated wrote.

Of course, the same could be said about any starting quarterback. No team wants to see their starter take a big hit in preseason, regardless of their size.

A former NFL quarterback himself, Chase Daniel of the Athletic also wrote an article questioning his size and the decision to play him in the preseason.

"If I were the Commanders, I would not let Jayden Daniels see the field again this preseason," Daniel wrote. "He just looks smaller than what he weighed in at the combine. If there was one knock against him, he does not know how to slide, he does not know how to protect himself."

You can teach getting down and sliding in practices, but unfortunately, you can’t teach size. Daniels will likely add weight as his career progresses. ... and in the meantime? While everyone seems to be fixated on "their right answer,'' there is no such thing.

Should he play a lot now? Should he be in mothballs until the regular season? Should be play with caution? Should he "be himself''?

    There is no "right answer.''
