Chargers' Jim Harbaugh Made Shocking, Unique Offer to Colin Kaepernick to Join Team

Colin Kaepernick hasn't been part of an NFL roster since the 2016 season, but that hasn't stopped him from making every attempt at a comeback.

There could be another way for the former San Francisco 49ers signal-caller to get back into the NFL, although it wouldn't be in a playing capacity.

New Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh reached out to Kaepernick not long after taking on his new coaching duties in January. He offered Kaepernick a position on the Chargers coaching staff, according to USA Today's Jarrett Bell .

However, Harbaugh still hasn't received a response.

“Yeah, we talked a little bit about it,” Harbaugh said. “He’s considering it. He was out of the country. He said he was going to get back to me. We haven’t reconnected since then. That was early, early in the year.”

Perhaps Kaepernick, now 36, has already given Harbaugh his answer, albeit indirectly. He most recently told Sky Sports that he's still training in hopes of playing for a team in the NFL.

The door seems to still be open, and if nothing else, Harbaugh believes Kaepernick could greatly succeed in a coaching role.

“If that was ever the path he was to take, I think that would be tremendous. He’d be a tremendous coach if that’s the path he chose,” Harbaugh added.

Kaepernick was part of Harbaugh's 49ers team for the coach's entire four-year tenure. In Harbaugh's first season, 2011, the 49ers drafted Kaepernick in the second round, 36th overall. As a rookie, Kaepernick made appearances in just three games. He didn't become the full time starter until the 2013 season, where he went 12-4. He's 28-30 overall in his career.

Kaepernick's absence from the NFL has been highly controversial. He has not been part of an NFL roster since he began protesting racial injustices by kneeling during the national anthem, first during a preseason game back in 2016. He later sued the NFL for collusion after going unsigned during the 2017 season.

In 2016, his last season in the NFL, Kaepernick was coming off multiple surgeries on his thumb, knee, and shoulder. He went 1-10 that year as a starter, throwing for 2,241 yards, 16 touchdowns, and four interceptions with a 59.2% completion percentage.

“We’re still training, still pushing,” Kaepernick told Sky Sports. “So, hopefully. We’ve just got to get one of these team owners to open up.”
