SOURCE: Cowboys Trade for ‘Nasty’ Giants DL Jordan Phillips

The Dallas Cowboys have encountered concerns regarding the depth on their defensive front after several key departures in the offseason. To alleviate some of those questions, they have turned to a division rival.
Wednesday night, the Cowboys acquired defensive tackle Jordan Phillips from the New York Giants, a source confirms to CowboysCountry. They also receive a seventh-round pick in exchange for a sixth-rounder in the deal.
The move enhances the middle of the Dallas defensive line that needed a boost with a previous lack of depth and experience. Phillips brings the necessary aid in both areas and especially in the latter.
The 10-year veteran has played for three different teams throughout his NFL tenure and most recently suited up for the Buffalo Bills in his second stint with the team. Phillips started his career with the Miami Dolphins and has also played for the Arizona Cardinals.
Phillips, 6-6 and 350 and a former second-round pick from Oklahoma, signed a one-year deal with the Giants, but should be a contributor up front. Mazi Smith has impressed through training camp and limited preseason action while Osa Odighizuwa has developed into a star for the Cowboys. Behind those two, however, the validity of this line would be put to the test.
Phillips - who comes cheap on a one-year, $1.8 million deal - adds to the depth of this unit and his skillset should provide a different look for the Dallas defense. He’s a player who takes up space, but maybe little more.
Projecting his usage now, it appears the Cowboys could use Smith and Phillips - best-known maybe for a certain nasty streak - in different formations and packages, but mostly with Phillips as a rotational backup .
The final fit? That remains to be seen, but to its credit, Dallas takes action and reaffirms a spot of need on the defense.
