The Phoenix Mercury are proud of what Brittney Griner accomplished at the 2024 Olympics. That much is clear after the team gave its starting center a new nickname following Team USA's gold medal win.

Griner was part of the USA women's basketball team that dominated the Paris Olympics en route to the gold medal. The Mercury star averaged 7.3 points and 4.2 rebounds in six games, all while playing a limited role as a backup to A'ja Wilson.

Team USA beat France in a thrilling final, 67-66, with Griner finishing the contest with four points and two rebounds in five minutes of action. Wilson led the way for the Americans with 21 points, 13 boards and four blocks in the finale.

After the squad returned home, the Mercury had a little surprise for their Olympians that were part of Team USA, including Diana Taurasi and Kahleah Copper.

The Mercury sent some snack baskets to Griner, Taurasi and Copper, along with personalized letters honoring them. In the letter for Griner, the team called her "Golden Griner."

"BG, AKA Golden Griner, You're GOLDen! 3x Gold Medalist," the Mercury wrote.

It's certainly a fitting nickname for Brittney Griner. As the team mentioned, she's now a three-time gold medalist, having been part of the 2016 and 2021 Team USA rosters that also dominated the Olympics.

Sure enough, the Mercury hope that Golden Griner will be able to keep winning when the WNBA returns. They are sixth in the standings with a 13-12 record, well in position for a playoff spot.

Griner, who is averaging 18.6 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game, will definitely be crucial in their postseason and title bid.
