Devin Williams was simply sensational on the mound Wednesday night. On just seven pitches, Williams symbolically set over $1.2 billion worth of baseball contracts on fire.

The 30-year-old Milwaukee Brewers closer got the unenviable task of trying to keep safe his team’s one-run lead in the ninth inning while facing the Los Angeles Dodgers superstar trio of Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman.

Fortunately for the Brewers, Williams was up for the challenge, as he retired all three Dodgers hitters while throwing all his pitches into the strike zone. He got Ohtani to fly out first. Then he struck out Betts in three pitches. Lastly, Williams got Freeman on a changeup that resulted in a groundout.

“I want to get them out,” Williams told reporters following Milwaukee’s 5-4 victory (h/t Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentine l).

“That’s really all that goes through my head. It doesn’t matter what their contract is.”

Based on the most recent deals they signed, Ohtani, Betts, and Freeman have the Dodgers on the hook for over a billion dollars. Ohtani inked a record-setting 10-year, $700 million contract in 2023; Betts was signed by LA to a 12-year, $365 million extension deal in 2020; and Freeman received a six-year, $162 million pact in 2022.

The Brewers, who snapped a three-game losing skid with the win over Los Angeles, will look to beat the Dodgers again in the series finale this Thursday at American Family Field.
