The New York Giants are making a significant move in their secondary, as they release veteran safety Jalen Mills , according to ESPN ’s Adam Schefter via X (formerly Twitter).

Mills, who has been dealing with a calf injury that kept him out of training camp, is set to hit the open market. The decision comes as the Giants continue to address their depth at the safety position following a series of injuries that have left the unit short-handed.

Mills, a seventh-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016, joined the Giants as a free agent in March after spending the last three seasons with the New England Patriots. In his final season with the Patriots, Mills appeared in all 17 games, recording 45 total tackles, one pass defensed, and a forced fumble. He played 40 percent of New England’s defensive snaps, contributing significantly to their secondary.

Throughout his eight-year NFL career, Mills has been a consistent presence on the field, appearing in 106 games with 83 starts. He has registered 53 passes defensed and seven interceptions, bringing experience and versatility to any team looking to bolster their secondary.

The Giants’ decision to release Mills comes as they work to fill gaps in their defense following injuries to safeties Gervarrius Owens and Elijah Riley. In response, the team worked out several safeties , including Raheem Layne and Jonathan Sutherland, ultimately signing Layne after a successful workout.

As Jalen Mills becomes available on the open market, teams in need of a seasoned safety may find a valuable addition in the veteran. Meanwhile, the Giants continue to focus on ensuring their secondary is well-equipped for the upcoming 2024 season.
