The New York Giants are poised to turn a long-standing weakness into a strength this season, as their offensive line appears to be reaping the benefits of facing elite pass-rushers in practice.

Historically, the Giants’ offensive line has struggled, but a productive offseason that brought in key upgrades is beginning to pay dividends. This improvement was on display during the team’s first preseason game against the Detroit Lions , where the line showed a marked improvement.

One of the most impactful additions to the Giants’ defense this offseason was the acquisition of star pass-rusher Brian Burns via trade. Burns, a former Pro Bowler with the Carolina Panthers, has quickly established himself as one of the Giants’ most crucial players. His presence in practice has been a significant challenge for the offensive line, pushing them to refine their techniques and elevate their performance.

Right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor , who joined the Giants this offseason after three years with the Las Vegas Raiders , praised Burns for his speed and ability to bend the corner.

“He’s really frikkin’ fast around the edge, and he can bend the corner really well,” Eluemunor said , emphasizing that Burns forces the offensive line to be “perfect” in every rep.

Eluemunor likened Burns’ impact on the Giants’ practice sessions to the effect that Maxx Crosby, a three-time Pro Bowler, had on the Raiders, noting that Burns is raising the standard for the entire offensive unit.

The Giants’ offensive line isn’t just facing Burns in practice. They also contend with rising star EDGE Kayvon Thibodeaux and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence . This daily exposure to top-tier defensive talent is expected to translate into improved performance for the offensive line throughout the season.

As the Giants continue their preparations for the 2024 NFL season, the offensive line’s development against such formidable competition could be a key factor in the team’s success.
