Red Sox Get Critical Injury Update On Former MLB All-Star Liam Hendriks

The Boston Red Sox could be adding a piece to their bullpen in September, barring any setbacks.

Three-time All-Star reliever Liam Hendriks is expected to begin a rehab assignment on Sunday, per Chris Cotillo of Mass Live. It's the final step the righty will have to take before joining the big league club.

Hendriks last pitched in June of 2023 with the Chicago White Sox but unfortunately underwent Tommy John Surgery just two months later. Given his extended period away from the mound, the Red Sox aren't rushing him back.

Skipper Alex Cora said Hendriks will probably make 6-8 appearances in the minors. It will be a little bit different for him as well because the Aussie needs to show that he can pitch multiple days in a row. Boston will be monitoring his progress.

Hendricks, 35, owns a career 3.82 ERA. He was an All-Star in back-to-back years in 2021 and 2022, compiling 38 saves in '21. He signed a two-year contract worth $10 million with the Red Sox on February 20.
