Max Scherzer Demands MLB Address Other Issue Before Changing Pitching Rule

Injuries to pitchers have been a major problem in the big leagues for years now. It feels like almost everyone who takes the mound undergoes Tommy John at some point or deals with a serious shoulder issue.

So, Major League Baseball should be focusing on how to stop injuries, right? That's exactly what Texas Rangers stud Max Scherzer thinks.

Despite an ESPN report coming out that the MLB may enforce a pitching rule in the future where starters would need to pitch a minimum of six innings, Scherzer wants to see the league first look after their own.

Via Evan Grant of Dallas News:

“I’m all for going down this route,” said Scherzer. “But we can’t talk about minimums and having starting pitchers pitch more, until we address the injury issue first. That has to be addressed first. Both MLB and the [MLBPA] both need to listen to what the leading surgeons who are performing all the Tommy John surgeries are saying and what they are saying they want to see happen to protect pitchers’ elbows.

“We can’t have the conversation about pitching longer until we have the other conversation first. Otherwise, we’re only going to make the injury situation worse.”

Scherzer is one of the most durable pitchers around but he's only made eight starts this season due to several issues. He's currently on the IL with arm fatigue.

The veteran is right. Until pitcher injuries begin to decrease, there's no sense in making any concrete changes in the bigs.
