New York lost the series after a 3 hour and 45 minute clash with the Athletics that feels, far and away, like the worst loss of the year. The game’s length is only one reason why it was so painful. The Mets are in a bad place right now.

The Mets are playing for their season. The A’s are well out of the playoff race. New York scored four runs in the third inning, giving them a 5-0 lead.

Jose Quintana walked a tightrope in the first and third innings. He loaded the bases in both innings and was able to get out of the innings without giving up any runs. But Quintana was not able to wiggle out of the jam he created in the fourth.

Quintana did the inexcusable. With a big lead, a pitcher is supposed to just throw strikes. A veteran pitcher is well aware of the job he has when given a big lead. However, Quintana proceeded to give up two walks with two out. The free passes loaded the bases for J.J Bleday. Bleday hit a grand slam that cut the lead to one.

Quintana only escaped the fourth thanks to a great Mets relay which gunned Shea Langeliers out at the plate. The leftie's day ended there. Quintana pitched 4 innings and gave up seven hits and four walks. The fourth inning was the opposite of what the Mets needed from Quintana.

Mark Vientos hit his second home run of the day in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-4 Mets.

Huascar Brazobán gave up a run in the fifth and the A’s cut the lead to 6-5. Reed Garrett pitched the sixth. The right hander gave up two runs on three hits and a walk. The A’s had come all the way back from 5-0 to take the lead.

At this point in the game, it was 7-6 and only the sixth inning. Given the way the game had gone, it felt like there was a lot more scoring left. However, New York’s offense shut down. The Mets did not score after Vientos’ home run in the fourth.

New York went back to their struggles with runners in scoring position in this game, going 2-11 with RISP.

The Mets need to find a way to get back on the right track. They remain two games behind the Braves, but that number will increase if they cannot get right soon.
