Winning gold against France in the 2024 Paris Olympics rejuvenated WNBA veteran Brittney Griner. The Phoenix Mercury center averaged 7.3 points in Paris as a role player on Team USA. Griner caught her second wind against Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese.

In the 85-65 beatdown at the Sky's expense, Griner embodied what it means to dominate your opponent. While Reese broke a few records in the Sky's 20-point loss, Griner destroyed the opposition with five blocks. Of Griner's five back-breaking rejections, three of them occurred on Reese. For as tough as Reese is, Griner is a bonafide veteran known for crashing the boards and dunking once upon a time.

Reese finished an inefficient 4-14 field goal shooting.

Reese's worst nightmare, Griner, scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds and six assists. Aside from Griner's impressive outing, her 2024 Team USA teammate scored a game-high 29 points.

The Mercury moved to 14-12, positioned sixth in the WNBA. Meanwhile, the Indiana Fever are one spot lower, with an 11-15 record. Rookie All-Star Caitlin Clark and the Fever face the Mercury on Friday at 7:30 PM Eastern Time.

20-year veteran Diana Taurasi scored 11 points against the Sky. The last time Clark and Taurasi battled, the Fever won. The two aforementioned starters had an off performance, combining for a miserable 4-20 three-point shooting night. Withstanding Clark's inefficient shooting, the Fever beat the Mercury 88-82 on Jun. 30. In the loss, Griner scored 24 points on an impressive 8-10 free-throw shooting mark.

Friday's match is prime for a tense competition between two playoff teams fighting for position.
