Steelers’ Draft Focus: Strengthening the Trenches and Adding Explosive Playmakers

The Pittsburgh Steelers have made significant strides in revamping their offensive line over the past two seasons under general manager Omar Khan and Assistant GM Andy Weidl .

With first-round picks, Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu anchoring the tackle positions and key additions like Spencer Anderson and Mason McCormick bolstering the interior, the Steelers' offensive line has undergone a complete transformation. However, as the team looks ahead to the 2025 NFL Draft, Weidl has hinted at a shift in focus.

Speaking on Friday, Weidl emphasized the importance of building through the trenches but suggested that the next area of priority might be the defensive line.

"You always want to be strong up front," Weidl said . "If you need to go win a game on the road late in the season or in a playoff game, your offensive line and front seven have to show up."

With veterans like Cam Heyward and Larry Ogunjobi approaching the latter stages of their careers, and the team lacking a clear successor for these key positions, it appears that the Steelers may target defensive line talent in the upcoming draft.

The Steelers already have a promising piece in place with Keeanu Benton , their second-round pick from 2023, but the need for additional young talent on the defensive front is evident. The current roster includes rotational players like DeMarvin Leal and Isaiahh Loudermilk , but a long-term replacement for Heyward and Ogunjobi is still needed.

Weidl also acknowledged the need for explosive playmakers, particularly at wide receiver. The Steelers are still seeking a reliable partner for George Pickens and are exploring options, including the potential acquisition of San Francisco 49ers wideout Brandon Aiyuk . Regardless of whether that move materializes, wide receiver remains a critical need for the Steelers, especially with Van Jefferson on a one-year deal and younger receivers like Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson better suited for the slot.

Interestingly, Weidl did not address the quarterback position, where all three of the Steelers’ top quarterbacks are on expiring contracts entering the season. The Steelers seem content to let the situation play out, confident that they can secure the quarterback they need for 2025 after the season concludes.

While the Steelers may consider trading some draft picks to acquire a wide receiver, it appears their first-round pick is likely earmarked for the defensive line, reflecting a shift in focus as the team continues to build for the future.
