Patrick Mahomes Reveals Message to Chiefs Teammates
By Adam Schultz,
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has already accomplished everything most would ever dream of in the NFL...and he's only been a full-time starter for six seasons.
But that doesn't mean the future Hall of Famer is resting on his laurels - he's fighting to get better every year. With the Chiefs adding Marquise Brown and Xavier Worthy to the offense this offseason, Mahomes now has a genuine deep threat at his disposal, something he hasn't had since Tyreek Hill was a Chief.
And during training camp, Mahomes has revealed that he has been dialing up the launch codes to try and get that part of the offense humming, but stressed it is all about finding balance in how the offense attacks.
“I've been trying to push the push the envelope, trying to push the ball downfield, trying to make sure that we stay in that attacking mindset,” Mahomes said . "But at the same time find that right balance. There's been days where we've connected on a lot of deep passes, and there's days we've missed them. That's what this is for [preseason] is for us to try to see what we can get away with, try to see what we can do and see what everybody's great at."
As the long grind of training camp now takes hold, players can see the finish line as the second preseason game comes into view. For the Chiefs, its a tough outing against Dan Campbell's Detroit Lions , who managed to get the Week 1 win at Arrowhead last season.
For Mahomes, while the group has had a good camp overall, they can't let their standards slip - it's all gas, no brakes as Kansas City makes a sprint for the regular season.
"I thought we had a great camp, but it's not done now we got to continue into this preseason game against the Lions will be a great test," Mahomes added. "They play hard, great football team, and then going back to KC, you can't let off the gas. You have to keep pushing because we have, I mean, the beginning of our schedule is tough, and you'd be ready for it.”
All eyes will be on the Chiefs in the opening two weeks of the season as the Baltimore Ravens and the Cincinnati Bengals come to Arrowhead in what looms as a tough first fortnight for the defending champs.
But with Mahomes now armed with his deep threats, coupled with Travis Kelce, Rashee Rice, and Isiah Pacheco, there's more than enough firepower to get the job done.
But until then, the foot must be pressed all the way to the floor as the Chiefs look to dot their I's and cross their T's in the lead-up to Week 1.
