Chiefs Want to Give Xavier Worthy 'Some Catches,' But Keep Offensive 'Balance'

The Kansas City Chiefs want to unleash their speed merchant Xaiver Worthy before the regular season begins, with his potency yet to be really tested so far in preseason.

With the Chiefs dialing up a play for Worthy in their first preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, only for it to be scuppered by the defense, the offense ideally wants to see what Worthy can do with live NFL bullets flying before the Chiefs welcome the Baltimore Ravens to Arrowhead in Week 1.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes wants to see the rookie in action but stated that it is about finding the balance between feeding Worthy the football and staying within the offensive structure.

“We obviously want to get him some catches,” Mahomes said . “We called a play for him, that first play [vs. Jaguars] this last preseason game, obviously they brought a pressure, I got it out to Hollywood [Brown], but obviously we want to see what he can do in as live [action] as you can get before the season. So you have to take what’s there, but you have to give him chances to go out there and make plays. It's finding that balance; you want to get those young guys those plays, but at the same time, you have to play within yourself and the offense.”

With Andy Reid dialing up the plays, Worthy will get his time in the sun during Kansas City's preseason games, but as Mahomes alluded to, it's a delicate balancing act.

Yes, the coaching staff wants to see Worthy in real NFL action, but not to the detriment of the offense.

Boasting 4.21 speed, Worthy is a consistent home-run hitter for Mahomes and the offense, something the Chiefs haven't had since Tyreek Hill suited up.

But we may have to wait to see Worthy tear defenses apart until the regular season with so many other Chiefs receivers needing to prove their worth to the coaching staff.
