Former Alabama Star Caleb Downs Ranked As A Top Player In College Football

Earlier on Friday, PFF College released their Top 10 list of the best college football players in 2024 .

Ironically, not a single Alabama player is listed within this top 10, however a former Alabama player has found himself listed among the best talents in college football.

Caleb Downs took the nation by surprise with his decision to transfer out of Tuscaloosa following the Nick Saban retirement. Due to Saban's retirement, any coaching change opens up the transfer portal window for 30 days, and players on that team have an opportunity to transfer within this period of time, per NCAA rules.

Downs would announce his decision to join the Ohio State Buckeyes back in January, after it was heavily rumored that he would join Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs.

The Buckeyes have a massively stacked roster, and are already being considered as one of the best college teams as of the preseason, with Georgia holding the No. 1 spot.

This ranking for Downs comes after a solid freshman season at Alabama. Now, as a member of the Buckeyes, he is looking to elevate his game further and play to a style he did often in high school. Downs has been reported to taking reps on the offensive side of the ball, as well as a punt/kick returner.

J.D. Pickell of On3 even made comments on this back in June during his show .

If these reports are true, this could make Downs a bigger threat on both sides of the ball. It could, however, increase he risk for an injury to one of the top talents in college football. If he truly gets reps in the offense during the season, it could elevate his stock and could very well find him in the conversation for an invitation to New York for the Heisman Trophy.
